B Being the holy book of Islam and the centre of veneration of
Muslims, the Qur’an has extensively been studied by Muslim scholars. This
interest developed ‘Ulum Al-Qur’an’ or “the Sciences of the Qur’an” into a
discipline that comprehensively studied every aspect of the Book of Allah. This
book focuses on one of those sciences, which is studying the names of the
chapters (suras) of the Qur’an. It explains where each chapter name has come
from and tries to identify naming patterns.
The book is divided into two main parts. The first contains seven
chapters each of which focuses on certain elements of the subject. The second
part analyses in detail the name of each of the 114 Qur’anic chapters. Among
the topics it covers:
·
An introduction
to the Qur’an.
·
Hadiths in
which the Prophet refers to chapters by their names.
·
Chapters that
have two names.
·
The Qur’anic
origin of the chapters names.
·
Where the names
appears in their respective chapters.
·
Categorization
of the meanings of the chapters names.
